"ENGLISH, as spoken by Singaporeans, is 'weird'. At least, that's what some Taiwan celebrities think. And they wasted no time in making their opinions known on a variety programme in Taiwan. In the 28 Jan episode of the popular variety show Mr Con and Ms Csi, the hosts and guests were seen making fun of the way Singaporeans speak English "
Its ironic these Taiwanese dared to laugh at our English. Most if not all Singaporeans can speak and write proper english when required and to think they are laughing at they way we speak for our usage of Singlish accent, i think thats more unacceptable. I for instance love to use Singlish a lot. I feel that its unique and authentic. Every single society have their own identity in the form of language they use. America for instance every different states have different accents or manner of speaking. So as many other english speaking countries so what is so weird and laughable about our singlish than. From the comments I read, many Singapores felt offended by the blatant remarks those Taiwanese made, however there are some who somehow agreed that we Singaporeans should diss our Singlish and use proper english regardless to whom we speak. They felt that the usage of Singlish make one sound uneducated and rude. I beg to differ though, usage of singlish does not make one uneducated or rude in any fashion whatsoever, however I have to agree that using rude remarks in singlish is inevitable. For example in my previous post I have to agree that the post is unsuitable for children age 12 < however I felt really content after writing my grievances in such fashion. Why ? because I’m a Singaporean. Does it mean I’m uneducated ? Or was I rude ? I don’t think so. I can choose to write my previous article in perfect english and the meaning will still be the exact same thing but the feel won’t be the same. Its something like a hip hop artist, spewing raps about his grievances, most of what he spewed we don’t really understand, the metaphors he used, the words he used that only people from his community will understand and the mass seems to enjoy it. None think that it was uneducated nor rude, so whats the difference with the usage of singlish than ? Vely farni meh ? If farni than go kan spider lor .... blardy taiwanese
